Brazilian Chamber Committee Approves Bill to Require Schools to Report Child Labor Suspicions

The Education Committee of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approved a proposal that would require schools to notify the local child protection council of any suspected or confirmed cases of child labor. The measure amends the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) and specifies that reporting should be especially prompt when the child is up to 12 years old.

The proposal, Project Bill 6436/25, is sponsored by Deputy Amom Mandel (Republicanos‑AM) and received a favorable opinion from the rapporteur, Deputy Franciane Bayer (Republicanos‑RS). Bayer said, "Daí a importância de deixar melhor explicitada na lei a responsabilidade das escolas de dar ciência aos conselhos tutelares locais, quando percebidos indícios ou verificadas situações de exploração do trabalho infantil."

The bill now proceeds to the committees on Social Security, Assistance, Childhood, Adolescence and Family, and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship. To become law it must be approved by the full Chamber and then by the Senate.
