Brazil's Jovem Senador program highlights democracy in social media
The 2026 edition of the Brazilian "Jovem Senador" (Young Senator) program organized an essay contest titled “Democracy on social networks: how to build a healthy debate”. Students addressed topics such as freedom of expression, misinformation, algorithmic filter bubbles, and citizen participation, drawing on works like George Orwell’s *1984*, Eli Pariser’s filter‑bubble concept, the documentary *The Social Dilemma*, and Brazil’s Constitution and the Marco Civil da Internet.
Program director George Cardim said the competition encouraged schools to reflect on democratic values during a year of national elections. Among the selected essays, Yasmin da Silva Freitas from Acre likened social media to a garden of seeds, while Rita de Cássia Medeiros da Silva from Rio Grande do Norte compared it to the ancient Athenian Agora, both proposing measures to strengthen digital democracy.
