Brazil's Judiciary faces new census and calls for STF transparency

The National Council of Justice (CNJ) will conduct a new census of the Brazilian Judiciary to update the profile of its magistrates. Announced by CNJ and Supreme Federal Court (STF) President Edson Fachin, the study aims to provide quantitative data to help formulate evidence-based judicial policies, guide training, and promote diversity and inclusion.

Separately, a letter signed by 198 former ministers, jurists, and business leaders has been sent to Edson Fachin. The document expresses support for measures attributed to the STF Presidency and calls for transparency regarding investigations into institutional crises within the court. The signatories are requesting that a plenary session scheduled for September 15, 2026, be held publicly, as mandated by the Federal Constitution. The letter also proposes institutional reforms to strengthen collegiality, impartiality, and social control over the Supreme Court.
