Brazil's Justice Minister Moraes authorizes evidence sharing with Federal Highway Police in coup case
Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes authorized the transfer of evidence gathered in the criminal investigation of the “nucleus 2” of the Jan 8, 2023 coup attempt to the Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF). The material – including bank statements, financial‑intelligence reports and transaction records – will be used by the PRF for an internal disciplinary proceeding against three federal highway police officers suspected of improper ties with private security firms Combat Armor Defense and Arbitrium Empreendimentos.
The PRF cited the final report of the mixed parliamentary committee (CPMI) that linked the two companies to a suspected money‑laundering scheme involving contracts for armored “caveirão” vehicles. The minister stressed that STF jurisprudence permits criminal‑investigation evidence to inform other procedures, provided constitutional guarantees of contradicted and the prohibition of “borrowed proof” as the sole basis for judgment. The investigation may uncover conflicts of interest, illicit payments or bribery, potentially affecting future public contracts and compliance oversight in Brazil’s security sector. Earlier, the broader probe led to convictions of several participants in the coup plot, including former PRF director‑general Silvinei Vasques.
