Brazil's livestock sector sees record piglet birth amid EU traceability push

On 11 June 2026, the Granja Cotia farm in Piedade de Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais, recorded the birth of 46 live piglets from a single sow, more than double its previous average. The sow, part of the Camborough hyper‑prolific line developed by Agroceres PIC, highlights advances in genetic improvement and precision management within Brazil's modern swine industry.

At the same time, the European Union has introduced stricter requirements for the import of animal protein, demanding comprehensive traceability and documentation of veterinary drug use for Brazilian cattle. The new rules aim to verify antimicrobial practices and expand traceability through the existing Sisbov system and the upcoming National Identification Plan (PNIB) set for full implementation by 2032. Brazil exported a record 3.1 million tonnes of beef in 2025, with the EU accounting for about 80 000 tonnes, a market valued for its high standards. Meeting these EU standards is seen as essential for maintaining and expanding access to premium international markets.
