Brazil's Lula pushes UN Security Council‑led Ukraine peace talks
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva offered a diplomatic initiative aimed at ending the war in Ukraine by involving the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom – to broker a cease‑fire and revive negotiations. The proposal was presented during the G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains, France, where Lula met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy expressed support for Brazil’s plan, saying the Ukrainian side is ready for a cease‑fire without new pre‑conditions and will continue dialogue with Brazil and the other powers. Both leaders agreed to keep the discussion ongoing and assess the outcome of the first diplomatic contacts, while acknowledging the challenges posed by differing positions of the major powers, especially Russia’s territorial demands.
