Brazil's Lula rejects Trump’s call to meddle in Brazilian elections

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva rebuffed U.S. former president Donald Trump’s remarks that Brazil had become “politically dangerous” and suggested the United States should stay out of Brazil’s electoral process. During a press conference after the G7 summit, Lula said, “Donald Trump can continue liking the Bolsonaro family, but he cannot interfere in Brazil’s elections.”

Trump had mistakenly linked the recent conviction of Eduardo Bolsonaro’s son to a supposed imprisonment, prompting Lula to criticize the U.S. leader’s understanding of Brazil’s democracy and to offer to show him a Brazilian electronic voting machine.

The exchange highlights tensions over sovereignty and political rhetoric between Brazil and the United States.
