Brazil's Lula Seeks Putin Contact to Mediate Ukraine Peace

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil plans to call Russian President Vladimir Putin and possibly arrange a face‑to‑face meeting as part of a broader effort to revive diplomacy over the war in Ukraine. The initiative follows a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said he would accept Lula’s offer to help negotiate a cease‑fire.

Lula said he will also re‑engage the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China – urging them to use their veto power to push for a peace settlement. The proposal was discussed on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains, where Zelensky reiterated the need for increased pressure on Moscow.

If successful, the Brazilian‑led mediation could add a new diplomatic channel to the stalled negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, though concrete outcomes remain uncertain.
