Brazil's Ministry of Health audits pediatric ICU at São Luís' Hospital da Criança

The Ministry of Health has sent a team from the National Audit Department of the Unified Health System (DenaSUS) to inspect the pediatric intensive care units (UTIs) at Hospital da Criança Odorico Amaral de Matos in São Luís. The audit follows allegations of multiple child deaths, a reported reduction in on‑call physicians after a management change, shortages of supplies, emergency‑care failures and possible care by staff without pediatric specialization. Cases under review include the death of 7‑year‑old Kerliane, whose family says diagnosis and treatment were delayed. The investigation is coordinated with the Maranhão State Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and other oversight bodies. The municipal government maintains the units comply with ANVISA standards, that all deaths are recorded in official systems and that the management contract is regular. DenaSUS will issue a technical report that could inform further administrative measures.
