São Luís hospital safety investigations

Overview

In late June 2026 the Maranhão Public Ministry ordered a health inspection of Hospital Ludovicense, leading to the shutdown of the entire first floor—including operating theatre, material‑sterilisation centre, deposits and the neonatal ICU—because of mold, leaks, structural defects, oxygen shortages and fire‑safety violations. The fourth‑floor evacuation route was also closed. Inspectors also found unsecured infectious waste and missing pharmacy documentation, leaving only ground‑floor consultation rooms functional.

On 12 July the state prosecutor opened a negligence probe into Hospital da Criança Odorico Amaral de Matos after families reported multiple child deaths, targeting the hospital’s management and its service‑provider contract.

A DenaSUS audit arrived on 14 July, reviewing pediatric ICU deaths, reduced on‑call staffing, supply shortages and alleged care by non‑specialised staff; the case of 7‑year‑old Kerliane was cited.

On 22 July the Maranhão State Court of Accounts ordered a special audit of the three pediatric ICUs and demanded an emergency contingency plan from the municipal health secretariat within 48 hours, questioning the IBMED contract and the drop in doctors from 53 to three per shift.

By early August parents staged protests demanding answers for the rise in pediatric ICU deaths (56 in the first half of 2026 versus 39 in 2025) and accountability, while security guards at Hospital Municipal Veterinário struck over delayed wages, underscoring broader tensions over health‑service management in São Luís.
