Brazil's Ministry of Racial Equality Boosts Climate‑Justice Leadership Initiatives

On 3 December 2025 in Brasília, the Ministry of Racial Equality (MIR) and the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) concluded the Kala‑Tukula programme, a leadership development project for Afro‑descendant representatives in global environmental and human‑rights negotiations. The event, attended by Minister Anielle Franco and coordinator Professor Luciana de Oliveira Dias, certified 74 participants from across Brazil and pledged to make the programme permanent, highlighting newly approved international documents on just transition, gender action and climate adaptation that explicitly reference Afro‑descendants.

From 17–19 August, the University Zumbi dos Palmares hosted an International Forum on Climate, Consumption, Black Care and MIL Cities, bringing together UNESCO, the Brazilian Supreme Court, several ministries and civil‑society experts. The three‑day gathering examined climate change through an antiracist lens, promoted the UNESCO‑led MIL Cities model for inclusive, resilient urban development, and featured high‑level speakers such as Minister of the Environment and Minister of Entrepreneurship, as well as STF Justice Luiz Fux. Both events underscore Brazil’s effort to integrate racial equity into climate policy and to prepare Black leaders for participation in international governance forums.
