Brazil's MPE clears Lula's election photo featuring hat
The Electoral Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) has issued a favorable opinion regarding President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's candidacy registration, stating that his official election photo featuring a Panama hat does not constitute illegal electoral propaganda. Vice Prosecutor General Alexandre Espinosa noted that the accessory does not hinder voter recognition and that allowing the attire supports political pluralism.
Lula began wearing the hat following medical recommendations after undergoing surgery to remove skin cancer from his scalp in April. This marks the first time the president will use a hat in an official photograph for electronic voting machines.
In separate developments, the Brazilian government has launched a new mental health initiative through the Unified Health System (SUS). The program provides 100,000 monthly tele-consultations via the 'Meu SUS Digital' app, specifically targeting women facing violence and atypical mothers or caregivers of people with disabilities and rare diseases. Additionally, First Lady Janja Lula da Silva met with Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin to discuss the National Pact Against Femicide to strengthen judicial protections for women.
