In the federal Chamber of Deputies, Pernambuco congressman Mendonça Filho (União‑PE) was appointed rapporteur for a constitutional amendment that would lower the age of criminal responsibility from 18 to 16. The special committee, chaired by Aluisio Mendes, will begin work in the second week of August, following the recent approval of a broad public‑security bill. Mendonça Filho said he accepts “the mission with great responsibility” and pledged a balanced, inclusive debate on the sensitive issue.
