Pernambuco governor race: Digital militia, posters, and poll
Overview
The Pernambuco gubernatorial race has intensified through legal disputes, defamatory attacks, and shifting polling data. João Campos (PSB) has bolstered his campaign by recruiting Mariah Queiroz to enhance his digital strategy, while proposing regional Women’s Centers to expand protection services.
Legal tensions remain high following Campos’s accusations of a ‘digital militia’ and ‘hate cabinet’ operating from the state government. Governor Raquel Lyra (PSD) has filed a criminal judicial interpellation to compel Campos to identify the entities responsible for these alleged social media attacks.
Conflict escalated following the distribution of anonymous posters in downtown Recife containing defamatory claims. These posters falsely suggest Lyra was responsible for the 2022 death of her husband, Fernando Lucena, who died of a heart attack. Lyra has condemned these attacks as ‘cruel and absolutely inhumane’ political violence, prompting investigations by the Federal and Civil Police, as well as the Electoral Public Ministry. Campos has repudiated the material, denying involvement and seeking to identify the authors.
Recent polling by Badra shows Campos leading with 48.3% of intended votes, up from 44.6% in July, while Lyra has risen to 40.2% from 37.2%. Additionally, candidate Ivan Moraes (PSOL) has filed legal action with the Electoral Court of Pernambuco, seeking to ensure his participation in a televised debate hosted by TV Nova Nordeste, alleging that excluding him violates federal law regarding candidate representation.
