Brazil's 32% ethanol gasoline blend defended by Orplana as MPF seeks suspension
The Organização de Associações de Produtores de Cana do Brasil (Orplana) praised the adoption of the E32 blend – a gasoline mixture containing 32% anhydrous ethanol – calling it a strategic move for Brazil’s energy security, decarbonisation and the sugarcane sector. Orplana noted that the Conselho Nacional de Política Energética (CNPE) approved the blend and argued that it supports rural producers, preserves jobs in hundreds of municipalities and reduces the country’s exposure to volatile fossil‑fuel prices while improving urban air quality.
The Ministério Público Federal (MPF) filed a civil public action seeking to suspend the E32 implementation, claiming a lack of technical studies on vehicle durability, emissions and safety. The MPF also requests a R$ 500 million compensation for presumed collective damages and asks for an independent technical expertise. Orplana countered that studies by the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia (IMT) on 16 gasoline‑only cars and 13 motorcycles found no negative impact on performance or engine reliability. The organization warned that suspending the blend would be a retrograde step for Brazil’s biocombustion policy.
