Brazil's Prosecutor General Rejects Bolsonaro Conviction Review
The Prosecutor General of Brazil (PGR) submitted an opinion to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) opposing the defense’s request to review former President Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction for an attempted coup. The PGR, represented by Paulo Gonet, stated that the defense did not present any new facts or evidence that could justify reopening the case, which upheld a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers seek to annul the conviction and the plea‑deal testimony of former aide Mauro Cid, arguing procedural errors and judicial bias. The STF will assign the request to its Second Chamber, with Minister Kassio Nunes Marques serving as the relator. The decision does not automatically suspend the verdict; Bolsonaro remains under temporary house arrest for health reasons.
The PGR’s stance reinforces the court’s earlier findings that the conviction was supported by a robust body of evidence, confirming that Bolsonaro actively contributed to actions aimed at disrupting Brazil’s democratic order.
