Brazil's Pix payment system evolves with biometrics and refund protocols

The Pix instant payment system in Brazil is undergoing technological and procedural developments. New biometric integration, facilitated by initiatives such as the partnership between Getnet, Mastercard, and Lina Open X, aims to streamline the transaction process. By utilizing facial recognition, fingerprints, or PINs, consumers can authenticate payments within the shopping environment, reducing the need to switch between applications to confirm transactions via bank apps.

Regarding consumer protection, the Central Bank of Brazil provides mechanisms for Pix refunds (estorno). While Pix transactions are instantaneous, users can request reversals in cases of incorrect keys, erroneous amounts, or fraud. In instances of proven fraud, users have up to 80 days to report the occurrence to their financial institution. For operational errors, immediate action is recommended to increase the likelihood of recovery, as refunds depend on the recipient's cooperation or institutional analysis.
