Pix system faces USTR investigation over trade concerns
The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has launched an investigation under Section 301 of its Trade Law into Brazil's Pix instant payment system. The investigation follows allegations that the Central Bank of Brazil maintains a conflict of interest by acting as both the system's regulator and its operator. Washington suggests this creates an unfair advantage for a 'national champion,' potentially harming American corporations like Visa, Mastercard, and Meta.
Pix has seen massive adoption, processing R$ 26.4 trillion in 2024. Recent data shows it has become the leading payment method for Brazilian digital consumers, used by 72% of online shoppers, surpassing credit cards.
Technological integration is also expanding. Companies like Autopass are implementing Pix and contactless payments in public transit systems across São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, banks are increasingly adopting Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow Pix transactions via smartphone proximity, further digitizing the Brazilian economy.
