Brazil President Lula declares cure from skin cancer after completing radiotherapy

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that he has completed the 15th and final session of radiotherapy and is fully cured of a basal‑cell carcinoma on his scalp. The surgery to remove the lesion was performed in late April at Hospital Sírio‑Libanês in São Paulo, and radiotherapy sessions began in late March and continued through May.

Lula made the declaration during a ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto where he also launched the Move Brasil program, which will finance motorcycles for delivery‑app workers. He removed the hat he had worn since the surgery to show his scalp to the audience. The president emphasized his “definitive cure” and expressed gratitude to his family and supporters.

The treatment did not interrupt his official duties; he maintained his schedule of meetings and trips throughout the process. At 80 years old, the announcement comes as he prepares for a possible re‑election bid later this year, highlighting both his health recovery and a new economic initiative for gig‑economy workers.
