Brazil's private payroll loan balance exceeds R$100 billion as firms adopt new employee benefit

The stock of private payroll loans in Brazil reached R$101.6 billion in March 2024, a 142.4% increase from March 2023. New loan disbursements grew 276% over the prior 12 months to R$76.2 billion, with March alone seeing a record R$10.9 billion issued. A Serasa Experian survey found that 45% of Brazilian employers still do not recognise the product as a benefit for their staff.

The March 2024 regulation issued by the Ministry of Labour requires companies to use the Portal Emprega Brasil and integrate data with eSocial and the Digital Labor Domicile. Employers act only as a conduit, deducting loan installments from payroll and forwarding them to the financing institution, so they bear no credit risk. The model is promoted as a low‑cost benefit that can improve employee financial wellbeing, boost talent retention, and reduce absenteeism, while keeping the firm’s cash flow and legal exposure unchanged.
