Brazil's Prosecutor General Opposes Suspension of Sentencing Reduction Law for Jan 8 Coup Cases
The Federal Prosecutor's Office (Procuradoria‑Geral da República, PGR) submitted a petition to Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) arguing against the suspension of the so‑called Law of Dosimetry (Law No. 15.402/2026). The law, enacted after Congress overturned President Lula’s veto, allows reduced sentences and accelerated regime progression for people convicted of the January 8, 2023 attempted coup, including former president Jair Bolsonaro.
PGR chief Paulo Gonet contended that the law does not single out specific individuals, is not limited to the January 8 facts, and therefore should not be deemed unconstitutional merely because it permits sentence reductions. This position contrasts with the Attorney General’s Office, which has claimed the law is unconstitutional. Minister Alexandre de Moraes had previously suspended the law’s application pending a final STF ruling. No hearing date has been set.
