Brazil's PT selects Camilo Santana as Senate leader while forging Amazonas election alliance

The Workers' Party (PT) in Brazil will meet on Wednesday to choose its new Senate leader, with former education minister Camilo Santana expected to take the role after incumbent Jaques Wagner stepped down following a Federal Police investigation. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has appointed Teresa Leitão to head the government bench, creating a vacancy that the party intends to fill with Santana.

Ahead of the 2026 elections, PT pre‑candidate for the Senate, Marcelo Ramos, confirmed a coalition with the PSD and MDB in the state of Amazonas. The alliance will see former governor Omar Aziz (PSD) run for governor, while PT will not contest the vice‑governor slot, focusing on a unified front. Ramos also affirmed the party’s support for Senate candidates Eduardo Braga (MDB) and the ongoing cooperation among the coalition partners.
