Brazil PT election alliances
Entities: Partido dos Trabalhadores · Sinésio Campos · Alberto Maranhão · Zé Ricardo · Tadeu de Souza
Overview
In early July 2026 the Workers' Party (PT) began reorganising its national slate ahead of the 2026 general elections. The party announced that former education minister Camilo Santana would replace Jaques Wagner as its Senate leader after Wagner stepped down amid a Federal Police probe. At the same time PT cemented a coalition in Amazonas with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), backing former governor Omar Aziz for governor and supporting Senate candidates Eduardo Braga (MDB) and other coalition nominees.
A few weeks later PT deepened its partnership with MDB in the northern state of Pará. The alliance named state deputy Dirceu Ten Caten as the PT vice‑governor candidate on the ticket headed by incumbent governor Hana Ghassan (MDB). The joint ticket also backs former governor Helder Barbalho and Union Brazil deputy Chicão for Senate seats. Both moves aim to create a broad democratic front that reinforces President Luiz Inácio Lula’s re‑election bid and expands PT’s influence across key regions.
Later in July, PT’s strategy in Amazonas broadened to include local-level arrangements. Former vice‑governor Tadeu de Souza announced a bid for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, securing an alliance in Iranduba with influencer Alberto Maranhão to mobilise voters through a large WhatsApp network and the “Iranduba Minha Vida” news page. Simultaneously, PT federal deputy and former Manaus councilor Zé Ricardo withdrew from the federal race to run for the Amazonas State Assembly, a move approved by the state PT executive to reinforce the party’s representation alongside the sole PT state deputy Sinésio Campos within the Federation Brazil of Hope (PT, PCdoB, PV).
