Brazil Receita Federal launches cashback tax refund for 4 million exempt filers

The Brazilian Federal Revenue (Receita Federal) opened a consultation on Wednesday, 8 July for a special “cashback” batch of income‑tax refunds. The pilot targets around 4 million taxpayers who were not required to file a 2025 return but had tax withheld in 2024. Eligible people may receive up to R$ 1,000, with total payouts estimated at R$ 500 million.

To check eligibility, contributors must access the “Meu Imposto de Renda” portal, enter their CPF, date of birth and select the 2024 year. Payments are scheduled for 15 July and will be made only to accounts linked to a Pix key that uses the taxpayer’s CPF. About 500 000 individuals lacking such a Pix key will be excluded and must file a regular return to claim any refund. The batch is separate from the regular IRPF calendar and serves as a test for future automatic restitutions.

The measure aims to simplify the return of over‑withheld tax and reduce fraud risk by using the Pix system, while providing a one‑off refund to millions of Brazilians who otherwise would not have filed.
