Brazil's sanitation expansion promises health gains and billions in economic growth

Investing in basic sanitation is linked to improved public health, reduced disease incidence, job creation and higher productivity in Brazil. A study by Instituto Trata Brasil and EX Ante Consultoria estimates that fully universalizing sanitation in the state of Maranhão could generate up to R$ 68.4 billion in net benefits by 2040, including a projected R$ 305.6 million in health‑care savings, R$ 32.3 billion in increased labor productivity, and significant gains in property values, tourism and municipal revenues. The analysis shows a return of roughly R$ 3.90 for every R$ 1 invested. These findings echo broader industry messages that better water treatment and sewer services boost quality of life, protect the environment and support economic development across the country.
