Brazil's SBPC launches 78th annual science meeting, continent's biggest

The Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) opened its 78th annual meeting on 26 July, running through 1 August, at the Universidade Federal Fluminense campus in Niterói, Brazil. The event, billed as the largest scientific gathering in Latin America, expects around 50,000 attendees and will host more than 250 activities.

The theme “Science for all: sovereignty, development and inclusion” was chosen by SBPC director Ana Tereza Ribeiro de Vasconcelos, who said it reflects science’s role in societal transformation. About 500 speakers from 23 Brazilian states will present across roughly 20 thematic tracks, with coordinator Andrea Macedo highlighting topics such as artificial intelligence and rare‑earth exploration. The programme also includes cultural presentations, exhibitions and free public access.
