Brazil's State Environmental Secretariat Reorganizes Structure

The State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability issued Decree No. 50.330 on June 15, creating two new subsecretariats – the Subsecretariat of Water Resources and the Subsecretariat of Waste and Circular Economy – while maintaining a total of six subsecretariats. The restructuring, which does not increase public spending, aims to strengthen the state's capacity in water security, sanitation, waste management and environmental education.

The Subsecretariat of Waste and Circular Economy will support municipalities in proper waste disposal, enhance recycling and reverse‑logistics, accelerate the closure of existing open dumps and promote opportunities for waste‑picker cooperatives. The Subsecretariat of Water Resources will oversee water‑related policies, monitor resources, and assist in drought and flood prevention in partnership with local basins and federal agencies. Additional subsecretariats focus on institutional articulation with the State Institute of the Environment (Inea) and sustainability and environmental education, consolidating efforts under the state's environmental agenda.
