Brazil's STJ mandates re-education groups for domestic violence offenders

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) has ruled that individuals convicted of domestic violence must participate in mandatory reflective re-education groups as part of their sentencing. The decision, made by the STJ’s 6th Panel, follows a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ).

Relator Minister Rogério Schietti Cruz stated that the measure aims to “transcend the merely retributive character of the sanction” by promoting dialogue and reflection. The goal is to ensure offender accountability and behavioral readjustment to prevent recidivism.

This requirement is aligned with the Maria da Penha Law, focusing on pedagogical actions to break the cycle of violence and strengthen protections for victims through educational and preventive measures.
