Brazil domestic violence offender re-education initiatives
Overview
In Santa Bárbara d’Oeste, Brazil, the “Tempo de Superação” program has been operating since 2023 to re-educate men involved in violence against women. Through a partnership between the public sector and civil society, the initiative uses group reflection meetings and individual sessions led by psychologists and social workers to address gender relations and machismo. As of late August 2026, the program has seen 76 participants.
Building on such pedagogical approaches, the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) has ruled that individuals convicted of domestic violence must participate in mandatory reflective re-education groups as part of their sentencing. The STJ’s 6th Panel stated that this measure aims to “transcend the merely retributive character of the sanction” by promoting accountability and behavioral readjustment to prevent recidivism, aligning with the Maria da Penha Law.
