Brazil's SUS expands telehealth to 100,000 monthly gambling‑addiction consultations
The Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) has raised the capacity of its tele‑health programme for gambling‑related problems from an average of 600 monthly appointments in March to a maximum of 100,000 remote, free and confidential consultations per month. The service is accessed through the Meu SUS Digital app and is delivered by psychologists, nurses and other qualified professionals in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and the Agência Brasileira de Apoio à Gestão do SUS (AgSUS).
More than one million Brazilians have already requested the removal of their CPF from betting platforms via the Centralized Self‑Exclusion Platform, a tool of the Observatório Saúde Brasil de Apostas Eletrônicas. Of those, 35 % cited loss of control over betting as the reason for self‑exclusion. The Ministry of Health also listed warning signs – such as sleep changes, lying to family, anxiety and financial strain – and risk factors including early exposure to gambling, easy online access and pre‑existing mental‑health conditions.
