Brazil's SUS vaccination halves RSV hospitalizations in infants

In the first half of 2026 Brazil's universal health system (SUS) reported a 52% drop in severe acute respiratory syndrome cases among infants under six months after vaccinating pregnant women against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Coverage reached about 90% with more than one million doses administered, and the programme also employed the monoclonal antibody nirsevimab for high‑risk children.

The Ministry of Health also expanded the digital health platform Meu SUS Digital, which now has over 50 million downloads and is linked to the National Health Data Network. The app lets users view vaccination records, lab results, medication dispensing and, where municipalities are integrated, schedule in‑person or telemedicine appointments. As of March 2026, more than 500 municipalities can book teleconsultations through the system.
