Brazil's tax reform may push airfares up 23% as IATA warns

At the IATA annual meeting in Rio de Janeiro, the association warned that Brazil's newly approved tax reform could significantly raise airline ticket prices. The new value‑added tax (IVA), set at 26‑27%, is projected to lift domestic fares by about 23% – from roughly R$650 to R$800 per segment – and international fares by around 26%, from US$740 to about US$935. Airlines also cite the high volume of passenger lawsuits in Brazil – one case for every 227 travelers – adding an estimated 3‑5% to costs, while the Ministry of Finance disputes the magnitude of the impact.

CNN International anchor Richard Quest, present at the same meeting, discussed his personal routine of frequent global travel, noting he completed 110 flights last year and offering jet‑lag mitigation tips such as early exposure to sunlight and prioritising sleep. His remarks provided a human‑interest perspective on the broader challenges facing the aviation sector.
