Brazil's Teatro Amazonas and Theatro da Paz nominated for UNESCO World Heritage

Brazil has formally nominated the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus and the Theatro da Paz in Belém as a joint entry for UNESCO World Heritage status. The two 19th‑century opera houses, built during the rubber boom, showcase eclectic Renaissance architecture and symbolize the cultural cosmopolitanism of the Amazon region.

The nomination will be examined by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea, from 20 – 29 July. If approved, the theatres would join Brazil's existing 25 World Heritage sites and become part of the global list of more than 1,200 sites in 170 countries.
