Overview

Brazil’s joint nomination of the 19th‑century Teatro Amazonas in Manaus and the Theatro da Paz in Belém proceeded to a successful outcome. After the technical evaluation held on 24‑27 July, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan announced on 27 July that the two opera houses were inscribed as World Heritage sites under the collective title “Teatros da Amazônia”. The designation marks the first cultural property from Brazil’s Amazon region to enter the World Heritage List, bringing the country’s total to 26 sites. Brazilian officials highlighted the theatres’ historic and architectural significance, noting that UNESCO recognition is expected to boost international visibility, strengthen preservation efforts and stimulate cultural tourism in the Amazon. The inscription follows Brazil’s earlier effort to raise the profile of its rubber‑boom era landmarks and to compete with roughly 30 other cultural and natural nominations for inclusion in the list.
