Brazil's Teatro Amazonas poised for UNESCO World Heritage listing

Brazil has submitted the historic Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, together with the Teatro da Paz in Belém, for UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the “Theaters of the Amazon” nomination. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will assess the sites during its meeting in Busan, South Korea, with a technical evaluation scheduled for 24‑27 July and a decision expected by 29 July.

If inscribed, the theaters would join a select group of cultural properties recognized for “exceptional universal value.” UNESCO designation is expected to raise international visibility, strengthen preservation efforts and stimulate cultural tourism in the Amazon region.

The nomination competes with about 30 cultural and natural sites from various countries, reflecting Brazil’s push to highlight the architectural and historical significance of its 19th‑century opera houses, built during the rubber boom and noted for their European‑styled Renaissance architecture and iconic domes.
