Brazil sees record domestic air travel in 2026 as tourism spikes and fares climb 11%
Brazil recorded a historic surge in air travel during the first five months of 2026. Domestic passenger volume reached 42 million, a 6 % increase over the same period a year earlier and the first time the total surpassed 42 million. May alone saw 8.31 million travelers, the highest monthly figure since records began in 2000. The Ministry of Tourism linked the growth to rising confidence and income among Brazilians and highlighted its spill‑over benefits for hotels, restaurants and local economies.
The state of Rio Grande do Norte reported a 159 % jump in foreign visitors in Q1 2026, attracting 26,851 tourists mainly from Argentina, Chile and Europe, helped by a new direct European‑to‑Natal flight and a 360‑degree marketing strategy.
Despite the passenger boom, the average price of a domestic ticket rose 11.2 % in May to R$ 632.53, driven by a 68.5 % jump in aviation fuel costs. The fuel price surge, tied to the war in the Middle East, led to more than 3,500 flight cancellations and reductions on regional routes in several states. Petrobras introduced a temporary repayment program for airlines to ease the impact.
International passenger numbers also grew, reaching 12.8 million for the same five‑month period, a 10 % rise over 2025.
