Eduardo Bolsonaro convicted by Brazil's Supreme Court for defamation

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has convicted former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro for defamation against federal deputy Tabata Amaral. In a virtual trial, the court voted 7 to 3 to uphold the conviction, following the rapporteur's decision, Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The case stems from social media posts made in October 2021, during which Bolsonaro falsely accused Amaral of acting in the interest of businessman Jorge Paulo Lehmann—a partner in a hygiene products company—while she was defending a legislative project for the distribution of sanitary pads. The court ruled that these statements exceeded the bounds of political debate and parliamentary immunity, damaging Amaral's reputation.

Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced to one year of detention and ordered to pay a fine of approximately R$ 80,000. The former deputy has been residing in the United States since February 2025, claiming he left Brazil to escape judicial persecution. This marks his second conviction by the STF, following a previous sentence for obstruction of justice.
