Brazil prepares for 2026 elections with legal protections and logistical updates
As Brazil approaches the 2026 elections, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and regional courts are implementing various logistical and legal measures. Under Article 236 of the Electoral Code, candidates are currently protected from arrest from 15 days before the first round until 48 hours after the vote, with the sole exception being flagrante delito. Voters also receive temporary protection against arrest starting five days before the election.
Logistical preparations are underway across several states. In Amazonas, the TRE-AM has begun distributing electronic voting machines to remote municipalities via specialized transport. In Maranhão, 66 remote voting locations will utilize Starlink satellite technology to transmit ballot box reports. Meanwhile, TRE-PI has started the public process of recording official candidate and voter data onto voting media.
To facilitate the voting process, the TSE is utilizing the e-Título app to send official notifications, guidance, and allow for digital identification for those with biometric registration. The app also includes new features for paying electoral fines and monitoring registration status. Additionally, the Pardal app remains available for citizens to report irregular electoral propaganda.
