Brazil's United Presbyterian Church approves LGBT membership and pastoral roles

The United Presbyterian Church of Brazil (Igreja Presbiteriana Unida do Brasil, IPU) voted at its General Assembly in Salvador, Bahia, from July 17 to 19 to allow LGBT individuals to become members and serve as pastors. The decision does not alter the church’s doctrine but sets principles prohibiting hate speech, discrimination, and any form of “gay‑conversion” practices.

The move aligns the IPU with the progressive theology of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and joins other inclusive denominations such as the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil. The Assembly established a special commission on gender issues that deliberated for three years before reaching the vote.
