Brazilian Presbyterian churches' internal changes

In late July 2026 Brazil’s Presbyterian denominations reported two distinct internal developments. On July 25, the United Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPU) voted at its General Assembly in Salvador to open full church membership and pastoral ordination to LGBT individuals, establishing anti‑discrimination principles while preserving doctrinal core. This policy shift aligns the IPU with other progressive Protestant bodies in Brazil.

Two days later, on July 27, the Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil (IPB) elected Reverend Juarez Marcondes Filho as the new President of its Supreme Council in Manaus, succeeding a leader of 22 years. The election, highlighted alongside a call from the National Conference of Bishops for responsible voting in the 2026 national elections, underscores leadership renewal within Brazil’s main Presbyterian institution.

Together, these events illustrate concurrent movements within Brazilian Presbyterianism: one branch advancing inclusivity on gender and sexuality, and another undergoing a leadership transition that may shape its future direction.
