Breakfast timing linked to increased type 2 diabetes risk
A seven-year study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology suggests that the timing of the first meal of the day significantly impacts metabolic health and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Research indicates that adults who regularly consume their first meal after 9:00 AM face a 59 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who eat before 8:00 AM. This correlation is attributed to the body's circadian rhythm, which dictates that insulin sensitivity is at its highest during the early morning hours. Delaying the first meal can disrupt metabolic balance and make carbohydrate processing more difficult for the body.
While the timing of dinner or the duration of overnight fasting showed less significant impact on disease risk, the study noted that consuming multiple smaller meals throughout the day may offer some protective benefits.
