Impact of breakfast timing on metabolic health

Overview

Research into chrononutrition has highlighted a significant link between the timing of the first meal of the day and various health outcomes.

A seven-year study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found that adults consuming breakfast after 9:00 AM face a 59 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those eating before 8:00 AM. This is attributed to the body’s circadian rhythm and peak insulin sensitivity in the early morning.

Further research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzing data from over 30,000 American adults, suggests these timing habits also correlate with mortality risk. Using those eating between 7:00 and 8:00 AM as a reference, the study found mortality risks increased to 10 percent for those eating between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, 19 percent for those eating between 10:00 AM and noon, and 29 percent for individuals eating their first meal after midday.
