Brenner Autobahn faces traffic restrictions and bans due to bridge work
The Brenner Autobahn (A13) is facing significant traffic disruptions due to construction on the Luegbrücke. During October, roadwork on the bridge will restrict traffic to a single lane in each direction. Additionally, heavy vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons, including trucks, buses, and large campers, will face staggered driving bans at night. These restrictions are scheduled for two periods: October 12 to 15 and October 19 to 22. Between 21:00 and 05:00, most heavy vehicles are prohibited, with a total ban for all vehicles over 3.5 tons starting at 22:00.
Asfinag has announced increased police checks to ensure compliance with these nighttime bans, and travelers should expect delays. The construction is part of a multi-year project to replace the aging Luegbrücke, which has suffered irreparable structural damage.
These disruptions come as transit traffic through the Brenner pass reaches record levels. Data from the first nine months of the year shows a more than 4% increase in heavy vehicle transit, with over 1.88 million semi-trailers and trucks passing through the Schönberg toll station. Total passenger car traffic has also seen a recovery, increasing by approximately 2.2% compared to the previous year.
