Brenner Base Tunnel cross‑border breakthrough Austria Italy Munich‑Verona travel time

On 28 July 2026 the two main bores of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) were joined beneath the Brenner Pass, about 1 400 m deep, creating the first cross‑border railway connection between Austria and Italy. Miners from both sides met in the tunnel and shook hands, completing the excavation of the whole 230 km tunnel system. The tunnel, co‑financed by the EU, Austria and Italy for roughly €10.5 billion, will replace the 150‑year‑old curvy Brenner railway line and is slated to open in 2032. When operational, travel time between Munich and Verona is expected to fall from about 5½ hours to roughly 3½ hours.

In Germany, the Deutsche Bahn has finished the preliminary planning for the Brenner‑Nordzulauf (northern approach route) and submitted the documentation to the Bundestag in early July 2026. The German parliament is now reviewing the proposals for the access route, which is required to realise the full benefits of the tunnel for both passenger and freight traffic across the Alpine corridor.
