Brenner Base Tunnel faces delays amid motorway construction
The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) project, designed to connect Austria and Italy via a high-speed rail link, faces potential delays. While the project aims to reduce travel time between Innsbruck and South Tyrol to 25 minutes and provide a rail alternative to the Brenner motorway, the official commissioning date has already shifted from 2028 to 2032. New indications suggest this target may also be missed, partly due to political delays in Germany regarding the feeder lines in the Bavarian Inntal region.
In the interim, travelers face significant disruptions on the Brenner motorway. Since January 1, 2025, construction work has resulted in single-lane traffic in both directions, with works expected to continue until 2030. This has increased the risk of traffic jams, particularly during holiday periods. Alternative routes such as the Brennerstraße (B182), Reschenpass, and the Tauern motorway are available but often face their own challenges, including overcrowding, closures for rockfall protection construction, or steep terrain.
