Brenner Base Tunnel delayed and costs rise to 11.7 billion euros
The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) project faces significant delays and budget increases. The BBT SE project company announced that the commissioning date has been pushed from 2032 to 2034. Total project costs are now estimated at 11.7 billion euros, up from the previous 10.5 billion euros.
These increases are attributed to inflation and the need to update technical planning from 2008 to meet modern safety and technological standards. To improve long-term availability and reduce maintenance interruptions, the exploration tunnel will be developed into a service tunnel.
While work continues in Austria and Italy, the project faces challenges in Germany. The Brenner North Access project, intended to connect the tunnel to the German rail network, faces potential indefinite postponement due to funding issues and political debates regarding its route and construction methods.
