Brenner Base Tunnel generates Europe's largest excavation dump

The Brenner Base Tunnel, a multi‑billion‑euro rail project in the Austrian Alps, is the longest railway tunnel under construction in Europe. As tunnel boring machines excavate rock, the site has become home to the EU’s biggest spoil dump, holding about 7.7 million cubic metres of material. Each month more than 250,000 cubic metres are brought to the surface and deposited, with a 30‑kilometre conveyor belt reducing truck traffic.

Project manager Sebastian Reimann said the effort is “gigantic” both logistically and in labour. The construction, which began roughly ten years ago, aims to restore the valley through extensive renaturalisation, turning the current rocky desert into a future alpine landscape.
