Brenner corridor sees new speed controls and rail expansions

Infrastructure and transport developments are impacting the Brenner corridor between Austria and Italy. On the A13 Brenner motorway in Tyrol, renovation work on the Luegbrücke has resulted in single-lane traffic in both directions. To manage safety and speed during these construction phases, which are expected to continue until 2030, a Section Control system has been implemented. This intelligent system calculates average speed between two points by recording license plates and timestamps, enforcing a 60 km/h limit.

Simultaneously, rail connectivity in the region is expanding to promote rail travel as an alternative to cars. New and improved connections aim to link South Tyrol more effectively with Milan, Rome, Austria, and eventually Munich. Recent upgrades include the introduction of ÖBB Railjets on the Brenner axis and the restoration of direct Intercity connections between South Tyrol and Puglia. Additionally, a new RegioExpress service connects Bolzano to Milan, and South Tyrol mobile pass holders will receive discounts on the Westbahn network starting in 2026.
