Brenner Autobahn Luegbrücke construction and speed controls

Overview

Extensive renovation work on the Luegbrücke of the Brenner Autobahn (A13) has caused significant traffic congestion and safety concerns. Since early 2025, the 1,800-meter bridge has been restricted to a single lane in each direction, with construction scheduled to continue through 2030 in three distinct phases.

To manage safety and harmonize traffic flow within the construction zone, the Austrian highway operator ASFINAG implemented a Section Control speed enforcement system. Introduced in January 2026, this system monitors average speeds between entry and exit points to enforce a 60 km/h limit on the bridge, affecting transit between Austria's Tyrol region and Italy. The system records vehicle license plates and timestamps to calculate average speeds, and drivers exceeding the allowed time are subject to fines.

Alongside these road developments, rail connectivity in the Brenner corridor is expanding to promote rail travel as an alternative to road transport. Recent upgrades include the introduction of ÖBB Railjets on the Brenner axis, the restoration of direct Intercity connections between South Tyrol and Puglia, and a new RegioExpress service connecting Bolzano to Milan. Additionally, starting in 2026, South Tyrol mobile pass holders will receive discounts on the Westbahn network.
