Brenner motorway faces heavy traffic due to construction
Major infrastructure projects and construction works are causing significant traffic disruptions on the Brenner motorway corridor connecting Austria and Italy.
In Tyrol, renovation work on the Lueg Bridge has reduced the A13 motorway to a single lane in both directions. To manage safety during these works, which are expected to continue in phases until 2030, a section control system has been implemented. This system calculates average speeds between two points to enforce a 60 km/h limit, rather than measuring instantaneous speed at a single point.
In South Tyrol, Italy, traffic on the A22 motorway is also heavily impacted by construction related to the Val di Riga railway variant project near Bressanone Nord. This project involves a temporary diversion of the motorway track for approximately eight months to facilitate new rail infrastructure. These combined works have led to increased congestion and transit restrictions for heavy vehicles in the region.
